Dear Friend
We had not thought of the stamps, but so far as I know, Sara is right in thinking they had not been sent. However, as there is no arriving at certainty on the subject, pray do not be so uncomfortably scrupulous about the next parcel we send, but let us pay for it without receiving stamps in return. Ten to one we forget to pay you in that way, and it would be better to leave such debts to adjust themselves.
It will be very pleasant if business brings you within reach of us. Do come, and if possible, let us know the day beforehand, that we may not be out of the house when you come. We will not live in community, but of course, like all enthusiastic friends, give you our [best wishes.] Come, and tell us about the penny paper, and let us know better how things fare with you.
Tell Sara, the charming article on Travel 1205 is Harriet Martineau's, but the exchange of cheque and receipt is understood to be the last communication between her and the editor. A pity for the Review, I think.
Mr. Lewes sends kind regards, and we are both glad you find the Biog[raphical] History of Philosophy a useful text-book. He is extremely happy in his work just now -- is dissecting every animal he can get in furtherance of his investigation into the nervous system, 'e0 propos of which a paper of his was read at the British Association. But I suppose I am making him a "more definite object of contempt" by telling you this -- as Helps says of the builders of the Pyramids.
