You will receive by rail tomorrow a copy of the "Life and Works of Goethe" 643 which I hope you will accept as a keepsake from me. I should have been glad to send it you earlier, but as Mr. Lewes has sold the copyright of the 1st edition, he has only a small number of copies at his disposal and so I doubted whether I ought to ask for one. I think you will find much to interest you in the book. I can't tell you how I value it, as the best product of a mind which I have every day more reason to admire and love.
We have had much gratification in the expressions of individual opinion. The press is very favourable, but the notices are for the most part too idiotic to give us much pleasure, except in a pecuniary point of view.
Tell Sara we have not yet heard from H. Spencer, and can't think what has become of him.
How is business going on? And how are the colds? We have been doing our share of sniffing and coughing lately. I am going out today -- for the first time for nearly a fortnight. 644 With love to all,
