Dear Friend
No indeed -- I thought no such thing, but meant simply what I said, feeling a strong dislike, as I have always felt, to accepting thanks for what are really no kindnesses at all, and in such matters I identify myself with Mr. Lewes, since there is no meum and tuum between us. But alas, alas these notes and letters are always producing false impressions.
Don't you enjoy the frost after that long time of mugginess? A happy, happy New Year to all the group that will be sitting round the breakfast table when you read this -- or that ought to be sitting round the table, if one of them were not basely insensible to the demerits of lukewarm coffee. I will write to Sara some other day.
