My Dear Nelly
You cannot think how pleased the old woman in the red cloak was with the nice little bag which you and Mamma sent her. She is glad too that you should have a tortoise if you like it, but for her part she thinks it rather an ugly pet. Ernest and Beatrice 946 have a canary of which they are very fond. It is a pretty little thing, but I would rather see birds flying about free and happy in the trees than shut up in a cage. What do you think?
Frank told me he was very sorry to leave you when he came back to London, 947 and I dare say you were not glad to part with him. He told me this one night when I went to see his Mamma. He was in bed and lifted his round rosy face from the pillow to watch us taking off our bonnets.
Good bye, dear Nelly. I often think of you because I very often think of Papa and Mamma and then little Nelly comes into my mind along with them like the little buds that will be gathered with the wide open carnations and roses in summer. You see I have no more room.
