Dear Madam
You have already, I trust, explained my silence by concluding that I was not at home when your letter arrived. In fact, I have only today returned from a continental journey on which I set out at the end of June. My stay in town will not last more than a week or ten days, and I fear that you are yourself likely just now to be away from the address given in your note. But if it be otherwise, and if it will be convenient to you to call on me next Thursday anytime between four and five o'clock, I will be at home and shall be happy to see you.
If from any cause I miss that pleasure, pray offer my thanks to Mrs. Lippincott for her kind remembrance and gift.
