My dear Sir
I have been concerned to hear, through Mr. Bastard, of your severe indisposition. Your letter was welcome as a proof that you are recovering, as well as for other reasons. I assure you that your correspondence would be very valuable to me, even if it were nothing more than the expression of sympathy from such a mind as yours -- but it is much more than this -- for your suggestions are a help practically. So long therefore as you can spare time and effort to write you will be doing me a real good.
I have read your letter to Mr. Chapman, and have requested him to send you a statement of his position and wants. I need hardly say that he is greatly obliged to you for the effort you are making on his behalf -- or rather on behalf of the diffusion of liberal opinion and scientific inquiry. I think better of our forthcoming number now I see the sheets in print. It will certainly be more "readable" than the previous ones.
I am inclined to think that one of the Dr. Browns 94 would be the best writer on Mr. Bastard's subject for a "Quarterly," but we are deferring decision on all such matters until the July number is off our hands. I am hoping to go to the coast next week, to reinforce myself with some sea breezes. I fear I shall not see you in London before I leave. I remain my dear Sir
