My dear Sir
I came here yesterday on my way to my sister's, where I am going to stay a few days. A full answer to your letter received on Friday I must defer until my return to London, at the end of this week, but I write now that I may satisfy you at once as to the person whom I have made the depositary of your secret. That person is Mr. Herbert Spencer, the author of "Social Statics," of the article on "Over-Legislation" in the July number of the Westminster, and of "The Universal Postulate" in the current number. He is a person for whose moral as well as intellectual character I have a very high respect and he is under no temptation, either constitutional or circumstantial to speak of your book to any third person.
I hope to write more at length in the course of next week. With kindest regards to Mrs. Combe, I am ever, my dear Sir,
