My dear Sir
It has just occurred to me that when I last wrote to you, I omitted to answer your question about the Testimonials. Pray pardon this forgetfulness.
I can truly plead in its excuse a painful pre-occupation of mind. I did receive three copies of Testimonials, but -- I suppose by an oversight of Longman's -- they were all "additional."
I am just going to set off on my journey into Warwickshire 196 almost fearing that I shall be frozen on the way. In ten days I shall probably be at home again, so that I shall be ready to receive your MS. 197 on the 12th. If you wish me to read it before it goes to press, it will be better to send it directly to me, but if not, I shall be much obliged if you will send it to Mr. Chapman with a note saying that you wish him to forward the proofs to me.
I am writing in a hurry just before setting out, so I must defer many other things that I should like to say.
