My dear Sir
I am now resolutely seeking what I have long been yearning for -- a quiet home of my own in a healthy situation. This, as you are probably aware, is the most favourable season for securing such a home on moderate terms.
Moreover, I have made a business engagement with Mr. Chapman 177 which will oblige me to remain in London throughout the coming quarter.
Thus, you see, circumstances sternly forbid me the pleasure of being with you in October. That it would have been a pleasure I think I need hardly assure you. I am sorry to say that before I received your letter I had, on the strength of your permission, lent my copy of your work to a critical friend. I accompanied it with strict injunctions of secrecy and my friend has so rigid a conscientiousness that I am more sure of him than of myself. So Mrs. Combe may set her heart at rest as to any consequences of this make. Ofcourse I shall not err again in the same way. I gave Mr. Chapman your order about the Act of Parliament, which I hope you will duly receive.
