My dear Sir
I have requested Mr. Chapman to send a proof to Dr. Browne, and I have this morning taken three more to Sir James Clark. Mr. Perry had his several days ago.
I am concerned at the mistake about the postage, but it was not owing to carelessness, for I took the parcel to the Post Office myself and had it weighed. My own recollection of the regulations was, that all M.S.S. books and pamphlets, weighing not more than a pound, and left open at the ends, were charged 6d. But the man at the Post Office assured me that 3d would be enough, and I trusted to what turns out to have been his superior ignorance. I am still at a loss to understand on what principle the pamphlet was charged 8d since it was left open at the ends.
I ought to have mentioned to you before, that Mr. Chapman suggested the insertion of the titles of the works referred to in the pamphlet, on a fly leaf instead of at the head of the first page, and I accepted the suggestion as leaving the least difficulty in case the project of an article for this Review should be given up.
I thoroughly appreciate your kindness and Mrs. Combe's in inviting me to accompany you on your summer excursion. That a thorough and agreeable change like that would do me good I have no doubt, but I am far less confident that my circumstances will allow of my having such an indulgence. I remain, my dear Sir,
Yours very truly
Marian Evans.
George Combe Esq.
