My dear Sir
I fear it is not practicable for me to accept your kind invitation to pay you a visit at Kingston. I must wait for the pleasure of seeing you until you come to town.
"Sir Mowbray Mount Edgecombe" is Charles Cole, the brother of Henry Cole (Felix Summerly). 209 He is, I fancy, rather a mauvais sujet. Mr. Pigott 210 was unwise enough to accept his proffered contributions to the Leader -- articles of gossip under the title of "Private and Confidential" -- but they turned out to be in such very bad taste, and so offensive from their indiscretion that Mr. P. at length politely declined them, whereupon Mr. C. Cole broke out into very impolite manifestations of wrath, though he has been paid for articles which he volunteered as gratuitous. This is one of the agreeable aspects of human nature with which editors are favoured.
One lives with hope that this "winter of our discontent" will be soon "made glorious"; 211 else this introduction to summer would be dismal indeed. Horace Walpole's mot 212 is this year no joke but a literal fact. The winds have really been severe and I have been, like the rest of the world, grumbling with a cold. I am delighted to hear that you and Mrs. Combe are so well. With kindest regards to you both, I am, my dear Sir
