My dear Sir
Since I last wrote to you, a few days before our departure, I have come a long way with my beautiful travelling bag. To imagine what a convenience it is to me, you must have been a lady without a perfect thing of that sort for the greater part of your life, but of all its uses I think the best is that it continually occasions in me the pleasant feeling that I owe it to your kindness.
I had thought of sending to you some letters which my friend Mrs. Bodichon wrote to me during her journey through Spain in November and December, that you might judge whether you would like to print them in the Pall Mall. But I may just as well reserve them till our return, as there is no matter in them which will not keep. They are graphic and simple, and they give a real individual impression, saying nothing that is said in the guide books, and correcting many false views that people get from travellers who go to second or third rate inns, on the one hand, and from writers whose chief object is to make much out of little. Au reste, they are brief, and would shrink into very small space of print. However, when we get back you shall read them, if you will take that trouble.
Mr. Lewes looks a little better, but the month has done little towards making him either more robust or less thin. We are at least well off in having set out early enough to save him from the terrible cold of which we have had a comparatively mild sample here. What sad things we read about everywhere, but last night and today there have been storms so tremendous on this Atlantic coast, that I keep thinking of shipwrecks.
I hope you keep well under all your heavy work and anxieties. We rejoiced to see the announcement, at last, that the new premises were to be entered on. May they lead to excellent conclusions!
