Bonn, June 1. 1868.
My dear Sir
Mr. Lewes wrote a few words on a card last night, introducing to you Dr. Perry, with whom I had the pleasure of talking a little on the subject of German Education. 784 I add a few words before our early departure this morning, to say, that Dr. Perry's long experience as an educator and his close acquaintance with German life have given him rare advantages for the observation of German Schools, of which it is especially desirable for us English to get some accurate knowledge just now. But on this general question I need say nothing to you, who have the best opportunities for knowing the important place it holds in our best minds at home. Dr. Perry, I believe, is personally known to various friends of yours, and is probably already somewhat known to you through his interesting evidence given before the Commission of Inquiry into our Universities.
Hastily, at 6 o'clock. a.m.
Sincerely yours
M. E. Lewes.
George Smith Esq.
