My dear Sir
I was delighted in more than one way by the handsome present you left for me this morning. First, it is my weakness to care very much for graceful attentions; and then in only turning over the leaves of "Esmond" I get an odour of the book that quickens my appetite for reading it again. I suppose it is ten years since I read it, and in ten years one gets a different person and finds new qualities in everything. I think this edition is as pretty a one as I ever saw of a novel.
I hope "Sylvia's Lovers" 145 is finding a just appreciation. It seems to me of a high quality both in feeling and execution -- so far as I have read. Always, my dear Sir
Yours very truly
M. E. Lewes.
