My dear Sir
I have been considering the offer contained in your last letter, and the result is, that I do not think it advisable for me to part with my copyrights. I can quite understand that it would not answer, as a business speculation, to advance on a prospective benefit, a sum which it would be wise in me to accept. 565 The inducement on my part to entertain the idea was not any immediate want of money, but the possibility that my copyrights might be worth a sum which, in addition to what I already possess, would have given us a secure income, that might have enabled Mr. Lewes to give the larger proportion of his time to an important work which he has long been meditating. 566 But now, dismissing this episodic idea, we had better lose no time in arranging about the terms for the cheaper editions.
I have not read the last number of the Chronicles of Carlingford, not having much time for extra reading, but I read the previous number, and thought the scene between the Rector and his deaf mother delightful. 567
