My dear Sir
I have been explaining to myself that you had not given us the pleasure of seeing you yet, by your being called on to perform some sad duties of friendship. But I hope we shall see you soon. Meantime, I must tell you how pleased I was to receive two copies of the really handsome volume containing Adam Bede. 633 The vignette on the title-page is perfect -- almost exactly as I saw the Hall Farm eight years ago in my mind's eye.
I intended to write you a longer letter but the whole morning slipped away at my work, and I don't like to let another post go without carrying to you some sign from me. Hastily --
