My dear Sir
Your letter enclosing the cheque for £30 from Tauchnitz came to me this morning. Thanks for both: especially for the assurance contained in your letter, that there will be no further retardation of the printing. The non-appearance of proofs, the bad weather, and a remarkable faculty of fidgetting, had made me take rather a desponding view of human affairs in general and my own in particular.
Mr. Lewes is gone into the city today and will see Mr. Langford 'e0 propos of the American business. I think we had better not ask more than £30, American publishers being very narrow-necked jars indeed. Farcical enough -- that Sampson Low should want to see some sheets of Adam! In order to form a critical judgment, I suppose? That is a little too far to descend for £30; -- though I acknowledge myself to be a very sordid author, with some love for money as well as for mankind.
The present type of "Adam" is very satisfactory -- one reads it without thinking about it, which is the best of all recommendations for type.
