My dear Sir
When you last wrote to me -- about three weeks ago -- you mentioned that you should shortly be sending me a cheque for the second edition of "Scenes of Clerical Life."
I have no doubt the subject has escaped your memory among the many things that claim it, but as it is urged upon mine by the fact that my exchequer is rather low at present, I feel sure you will pardon me for not being patient enough to wait until the matter recurred to you, as it inevitably would before long.
