My dear Sir
I return the last batch of proofs today. The opening of volume 2 up to p. 65 I returned, corrected on Mr. Sheard's copy -- on Monday.
It is very cheering to have your letters, and the proofs of volume 2 please me better than I expected. The three volumes will certainly have the advantage of being very various while they have the psychological unity that springs from their being the history of two closely related lives from beginning to end.
I ascertained from Mr. Sheard about the time for the sale under the decree of Chancery, before I wrote about it. The time depends on the Law Term during which the suit has been terminated.
I am rather in a drive of feeling and writing with my third volume: 491 that is in the nature of third volumes, and you will find my writing getting less legible. Pity you can't read it in print first!

P.S. Of course Mr. Sheard need not see any more sheets. I hope "Clerical Scenes" are not being forgotten. I looked into them the other day, and felt that I had done nothing better than the writing in many parts of "Janet." All I want is that they should not drop out of memory; and if the "Mill" enlarges the circle of my readers, there will be a new demand raised for my other books.
