Dear Mr. Langford
Thank you for the cheering words you sent me with the copy of Silas. 723 I am rather uncomfortably constituted; for while I am unable to write a sentence for the sake of pleasing other people, I should be unable to write at all without strong proofs that I had touched them. I confess I shudder a little at the high price of the book; 724 but it is a comely volume, with a delightful type.
I don't wish for any presentation copies, except one for Mr. Lewes's mother. Her address is: Mrs. Willim, | 51 Clifton Road East | St. John's Wood. We should also, by and by, like a couple of copies to be sent here. But there is no hurry about them.
I have not yet had an opportunity of thanking you for those nice oldfashioned costumes you were so good as to look up for me. You would oblige and help me very much if you would keep your eyes open for all books or fragments that will serve as memoranda of costume either mediaeval or modern. In the London Library they have nothing better than Fairholt's scanty book, 725 and unhappily, with my temperament, I fear it would be next to impossible for me to go to the British Museum. 726 I would go to some expense for a good book on mediaeval costumes.
