My dear Martha,
My heart is often with you, and our dear suffering Jessie. 436 I feel both her and your attention in enabling me to sympathise with you. . . . The sweet uses of adversity will compensate to her for these sad days, and she has even now the pleasure of all those little tendernesses of friendship that are only to be purchased by sickness. . . . I have been far from well myself; even to-night I am far too nervous to write with any comfort, but I could not let the post-bag go away without bearing you and Jessie an assurance of my love.
