Dear Miss Marshall
I am very grateful to you for thinking of my wants and letting me know what you could so promptly.
We shall have a shrunken party on Christmas Eve, poor Mrs. Edward Lewes not being well enough to venture out with her boy.
Don't you think it would have been "providential" if you had had no friends, so that you could have joined our party and made us happier? I know that would be considered good theology in some quarters.
I had a scrap of a note from Sara the other day, but she said not a word to me of her having enjoyed her visit.
