Dearest Barbara
Mr. Lewes's Mother died on Saturday and her funeral is to take place on Wednesday. There will be many things, of course, for him to attend to after Wednesday, so that it will be impossible for him to leave.
We should both of us have liked to go to you, and we cannot help longing to manage it, if you can still put up with us a little later on. If you had no other visitors in prospect for the next week or for Christmas week we could perhaps leave for a few days either in the one or the other. Will you let me know?
George is writing to Mr. Bullock 933 and forwarding your letter.
The weather has been indescribably oppressive, and we have both had colds. We seem to be groping about in a limbo, not in a world of the living. George has just finished the revision of his History. I am working at something 934 I want to go on with, but I could carry my pen and paper with me.
