GE to Barbara [Mme Eugene] Bodichon, [Wandsworth, 6 March 1860]
MS: Mr. Philip Leigh-Smith. Hitherto unpublished.
Dear Barbara
That was a charming way of letting us know what you were doing -- to send me the chapter of news written for your Father. Everything remains with me, from the Jackals and hypothetic Hyaena, to the designs for Oxford columns. O, I could write so much to you, if my nervous energy were not all going with a rush in the one channel of my fastclosing third volume. But now I don't mean to write anything directly to you; I am going to write to your sister through you. She will be with you, she tells me, next Monday. I want her to know that she has given me some very happy feelings by sending me some parting proofs that she has been thinking of me. First, a sketch of you, in which I learn to see more and more of you, as I keep it before me; and next, a sheet of caricatures that give me a merry sense of the merry vein there is in her. Looking at them when I was ill with a bad headache, the other day, I got some of the enjoyable breeze and freshness that is playing about that lucky artist with the streaming hair. Tell her, I thank her: no goodness is lost on me -- that is the only compliment I can pay myself.
I have been crying myself almost into stupor, over visions of sorrow. 498 So no more, except my love to you and yours.
Yes! one thing -- that I fancy we forgot to put stamps on our last letter to you -- slipping it into the box by mistake. I hope we don't often do those disgusting things.
Ever yours
Marian.
