I was under a delusion this afternoon in talking to Mrs. Sitwell. 175 I imagined that she was speaking of some definite plan for helping forward the higher education of girls, and it was in reference to such a plan that I thought it desirable to exclude lady-associates of the kind you wot of. When I found that it was only the Conversazione scheme, I was quite sorry that I had made my unnecessary remarks. For that sort of project

If you want histories, there are Mommsen's history of Rome, and Curtius's history of Greece. But they are both translated. Still they are admirably well written and therefore good to read in German. Grimm's Kinder und Hausm'e4rchen, and Grimm's Deutsche Mythologie might be thought of.
Gervinus's book on German poetical literature is too heavy, and presupposes all knowledge in the reader. There is a voluminous History of German Literature by Julian Schmidt, for one. 176 But [half of page torn away] less useful writing, because it [half of page torn away]
