Dearest Barbara
Mr. Lewes read your note this morning without sending it up to me -- else I should immediately have written a line to say, first how vexed I was to have missed you the other day. Next, I will remember your message to Mrs. B. Jones.
The word you send me of a life so bound up with your early years being suddenly brought to a premature close, 155 makes me imagine how your thoughts are saddened and solemnized in these first succeeding days. For her sake -- even for the children's -- the passing away seems a good. But every death that comes at all near to one makes one in some sense a mourner.
The precious flowers are duly cherished.
