Dearest Barbara
Mr. Lewes would delight in the vipers, but alas! he says he could not give the proper attention to them now. He thanks you for the kind thought. Dearest, don't get bitten in the heel.
On Saturday last, I received a letter from Madame Mohl saying that she was going to leave town on the following Friday, but did not like to go without asking me whether I could see her. I wrote immediately addressing to the Deanery, Westminster, 872 from which she dated her letter, and assured her that I should be very sorry not to see her, begging her, if she could, to come to me either on Tuesday or Wednesday at 4 o'clock. She did not come, and I have not heard from her. I wished very much to see her, and I cannot help being uneasy lest my letter should have missed her. She is one of the people whom I should most bitterly regret to have treated with apparent neglect. Will you try and ascertain the truth for me? I would not trouble you, but that I am ignorant of her present address.
I cannot write very cheerfully about the Boy. He gets no strength -- on the contrary, appears to lose some of his reduced store, and he has frequent attacks of pain. The alternations from discomfort to ease and brightness are as frequent as ever, but his spirits, though not depressed, seem to share in the increased feebleness. But one is so utterly in the dark, that it seems irrational either to be hopeful or fearful.
I will write in answer to your &unknown;other&unknown; letter, on the next sheet.

We think of going to St. Alban's next week, Charlie and Gertrude taking our place again.
I have just re-read your letter and see that the nest is a wren's -- not formidable. I will not forget to write to you when we come back. Kind regards to Miss Edwards.
