Dear Barbara
The pretty picture is come quite safely, and we will send back the useful packings. Thanks for the journal, which I shall look into eagerly -- and for the photograph of the '91Happy Valley.'92 I'm so glad you have such a paradise of your own to retreat to away from this hard noisy world. Thank God there is abundance of pure human feeling that makes no noise, else we might sink into the belief that it is but a devil's world.
Your letter, with its heart-warming words, came just after we had read the Athenaeum! 199 If one could be glad at any baseness, one would be glad that this is so bad -- it will carry no sympathy with it.
I would have written to your sister and enclosed the letter to you now, but that I [am] very poorly and trembling, and am only fit to sit in a heap with a warm water bottle at my feet. So no more now. Come again soon!
