My dear Barbara
I found your letter awaiting me yesterday evening on our return from Sevenoaks, where we have been spending a few days with Mr. Cross's sister, Mrs. Druce. This is the first of three family visits which we have engaged to pay, the other two being to Mr. and Mrs. Otter in Lincolnshire and to Mr. and Mrs. Hall (whom you know) in Cambridgeshire. We shall hardly get back from these till the second week in September, when we shall be obliged to attend to our house arrangements and other matters in town.
So this time we cannot do what we should both have enjoyed -- pay a little visit to you and Dr. Bodichon. We must wait for another time when you will like to have us. I am sorry that my absence hindered my sending you an immediate answer, as you wished me to do.
Please give my affectionate remembrances to Nanny and Miss Blythe. Also to our little dark-eyed friend who is "delightful to you." I dare say she would consider that a good final cause for her existence.
Mr. Cross sends his best regards. He would have been very much interested in paying a visit to Scalands Gate. Always, dear,
Yours lovingly
Marian.
Please thank Dr. Bodichon from me for wishing to see us. 468
