Dearest Barbara
You see I am not yet in town, which will account to you for my delay in acknowledging your note -- posted apparently on the 18th but sent to me only this morning.
It is a grievous trial, this that has fallen on poor Miss Marks. 333 Right or not right, it is the hard fact, that those who are strong (or a little the stronger) have to bear the infirmities of those that are weak, and may not please themselves. I suppose it is as she declares -- that you see no means of hindering her departure from Girton at the end of this term and entering at once on the struggle for existence. I, of course, can know nothing about the conditions, with the Hartogs, etc.
You have enjoyed the beautiful, though cold, autumnal days, I feel sure, since you tell me that you are very well.
And you will be glad to hear that just the right man is found for the George Henry Lewes Studentship. He is named Roy, is an Edinburgh student, and not a pupil of Michael Foster's. But Dr. Foster says he thinks him by far the most promising of young physiologists, and what is most satisfactory is, that Dr. Roy was looking round to consider how he might maintain himself without dropping his physiological work.
I shall be in London on the 30th. In health I am very well.
Always thine lovingly
Marian.
