My dear Friend,
I hoped for a fine afternoon in which I could run over the fields to tell you the reason I could not have the pleasure of seeing you yesterday evening. Fanny staid until after tea and I had Father to entertain so that I had no choice in the matter. I expect to have Miss R. Franklin on Monday but I shall at least see you at the Mechanic's Institute and have one of your smiles to cheer me. It must be easier to die for the world than to live for it -- easier to die for a principle than to act up to it, and I should be quite glad of such a short cut to virtue.
