My dear Cara
I feel as if I had been indulging in cruel gossip last night, and I cannot rest without entreating you again not to let my needless mention of trivialities have any consequences that can reach our poor dear S. I shall always welcome her affectionately on her rare visits, for the old regard is much deeper than any new and transient irritations.
Pray excuse my want of thought in not asking you to go upstairs at once on your arrival. I must plead a certain flurry which was owing to my having talked and stood ever since dinner, a flurry which ended for me in a fit of diarrhaea after we got home. For, to tell the truth, my looks flatter if they seem to say that I am well.
I am unfortunately situated in relation to you, dear Cara. Words are good for nothing and may even seem repulsive when so many various conditions hamper a corresponding expression by deeds. But I am in no way false in what I say to you, though in our brief interviews I cannot enter into matter-of-fact statements which I should be able to make if we were in constant intercourse. I do not write these things apologetically, but that you may the less disbelieve in my gratitude and affection.
