My dear Cara
Some weeks have passed now since you left Sydenham, and I cannot help being anxious to know whether they have brought a tenant. The thought that you would probably have written to tell me the good news makes me fear that there has been no such news to tell, and the sunshine is not so pleasant as it would be without that fear. Do let me know how things are with you in every respect. One is very thankful for the prospect of European peace, but these larger joys want some small personal comforts to give them the complete relish, and the particular comfort I should choose now would be the assurance that your mind is relieved from immediate worry about the year's income.
Mrs. Geddes -- who used to be Emily Bury -- lives near Guildford with her two little girls, and has just had to part again with her husband for three years! He is an Indian judge, you know, and has just had his year's holiday.
Since we came down here Mr. Lewes has been gouty and I have had bilious headache, but we are getting better, I by blue pill and he by taking walks before breakfast.
I trust that this sunshine is friendly to your husband's breathing. He is sure to make the most of each good, and will not be punished in the Dantesque circle of mud, as one who "piange l'e0 dove esser dei giocondo," or even in the fog, with those who say "Tristi fummo nell' aer dolce che'l sol rilume." 96 I fear that I have often deserved those severe ways of being "made to know better."
Sara is flourishing over her proofs, I hope. My best love to her.
