Dear Mrs. Chapman
I have been away for a week, and only read your letter last night on my return. With regard to the wish it conveys to me -- a wish which I have personally no objection to grant, for I think that Mrs. Oswald's melody is composed with much feeling -- I am in rather an awkward position. I have already refused a similar request from various correspondents, about songs in the Spanish Gypsy, on the ground that a treaty was pending with a publisher who had asked to purchase the right to publish all the songs. 834
That treaty is now at an end without any result, but Mr. Lewes is of opinion that I cannot properly, at least until some considerable time has elapsed, grant a permission to a private applicant which I have lately refused to others holding in no respect a different relation to me. But there would be no hindrance to Mrs. Oswald's publishing her composition in Germany.
I hope you enjoy undisturbed health, and much happiness in your children, who, I hear, have verified early expectations that they would show unusual ability.
