My dear Mrs. Pattison
The cottage at Haddington 229 makes such a pretty picture in my memory, that I could not help letting my thoughts linger over the possession of it as a country refuge. But Mr. Lewes, not having seen the place, shook his head without hesitation. We are in a vacillating state of mind as to the arrangements we should make for our short lives, and cannot yet decide whether we should keep a home in London and have a modest little refuge in the not-too-distant country, or give up London entirely. In the latter case our requirements would be rather immodest in the way of space for books and snugness suitable for rickety old people.
I fear that I have hindered Mr. Burton from having the pleasure of calling on you by mistaking the number of your house in Beaumont Street. He came on Sunday after you left, and before leaving wished to know your address. My imperfect "cerebration" yielded 4 instead of 46, and when your letter came I was sorry to think that it was too late for me to try and correct the mistake, on Mr. Burton's behalf.
