My dear Mrs. Pattison
I am in a condition to have the utmost fellow-feeling with you and the Rector in the useless martyrdom of bodily ailment. Ever since
Christmas week I have been suffering more or less from inflamed gums and varying face-ache, and these last two days a new attack has come on rather furiously. Otherwise I should have written to say, will you come and have a cup of tea with me on Thursday. But I cannot venture to invite anyone, and can only say, will you try the chance of my being well enough to see my friends on Sunday, as usual? 717
