My dear Mrs. Pattison
Are you in town? Last night only we returned from our long journey 168 which reached as far as Vienna, and since you mention in one of your letters which I found here that the Rector was to be in town on the 6th and that you might come with him, I send this letter to Beaumont Street 169 for the chance of finding you. Pray suspend all evil thoughts about me till you know why I went away without telling you, so as to save your writing in vain, and why I failed to fulfil my intention of writing to you from Berlin. Will you come or write to me to say that you will come? I am so troublesome that I am almost ashamed to ask you for any further expenditure of time on me. But I am always
Yours affectionately
M. E. Lewes.
