Dear Mrs. Ritchie
Your letter came on to me this morning. I am so glad to have it, for I have been long wishing that some sign of remembrance from you would fall to my share. No one has thought of your twofold self with more sympathy than [meine Kleinigkeit,] with more earnest desire that you may have the best sort of happiness.
Do come and see me. By the beginning of November we shall be in town again. Either there or here we should heartily welcome a visit from you and Mr. Ritchie. At lunch time -- half-past one -- we are sure to be at home.
Knowing this glorious country you can imagine how we delight in it. It is to the honour of the house that you assisted at its foundation, but the superstructure is not worthy of that beginning. Still we like the place on the whole -- which is the utmost that can be said of nearly all such likings. Ask Mr. Ritchie to remember me kindly.
