Tuesday Evening.
My dear Mrs. Cross
Alas, we have no time for anything this week except leaving undone what we want to do. We can see no part of a day on which we could get to you to have a parting kiss.
But is that pleasure forbidden to us on another arrangement? Would it be too toilsome for you to come and lunch with us on Sunday -- you and my nephew Johnnie? 93 That would be a delight to us, but I know that it is a great exertion to ask from you. I have faith that you will give us this pleasure if you can do so without tasking yourself in any way, which you understand would be a grief to me.
We have an engagement for tomorrow afternoon, 94 on Thursday we expect visitors, 95 on Friday we go to the theatre, 96 and Saturday we must if possible keep open for little preparations towards departure. Thus, you see, we have no choice but necessity to follow in giving up a journey to Weybridge.
Anyhow -- whether you can come to us or not -- you are with us very effectively in our memory and love. Mr. Lewes is gone to bed, but you believe in his affection without the testimony of a message. Greetings to all my family from
