December 6. 73.
My dear Mrs. Cross
Our wish to see you after all the long months since June, added to your affectionate invitation, triumphs over our disinclination to move. So, unless something should occur to make the arrangement inconvenient to you, we will join the dear party on your hearth in the afternoon of the 24th and stay with you till the morning of the 26th.
Notwithstanding my trust in your words I feel a lingering uneasiness lest we should be excluding some one else from enjoying Christmas with you. Our unsociability does not extend to the [lads] -- only to the ladies who spoil conversation.
I like seeing some of my nieces every Saturday at the concert, so that I can get a sense of its being a family pleasure. To look at Eleanour's 894 gentle face behind me now and then went well with the music this afternoon.
We have gone through adventures in the purchase of the carriage, and are saving the narrative for Johnnie. 895 His friend Dr. Andrew Clarke has been prescribing for Mr. Lewes -- ordering him to renounce the coffee which has been a chief charm of life to him, but being otherwise mild in his prohibitions.
I hear with much comfort that you are better and have recovered your usual activity. Please keep well till Christmas, and then love and pet me a little, for that is always very sweet to
Your affectionate
M. E. Lewes.
