Dear Mr. Browning
Your pleasant letter has come to us while we are sitting in chill shadow and helps our belief in future sunshine.
For the last fortnight Mr. Lewes has been laid up with rheumatic gout. But for the last few days there has been a gradual improvement and your attractive proposal seems to have a sanitary quality, fixing his imagination on something agreeable that may happen to him next month. So we gratefully accept your offer to get us tickets and rooms, and also your kind invitation to join your dinner-party on the Wednesday. 351
I have several times had news both of you and of Mrs. Julius Browning. 352
Lately I was talking to a charming girl who spoke warmly of her happiness under their care, and with affectionate admiration of your "duchess-mother." 353
It would be too melancholy a view of the world for us to think ourselves rash in trusting that Mr. Lewes will be his usual active self again by March 8. It will be very pleasant to us then to have a chat with you once more after so long an interval, and hear more particularly from you of the satisfactory way in which your labours are now appropriated.
