My dear Nephew
When your letter, telling me of a second loss in our family, 244 arrived, I was absent in Scotland, and I only read it on my return home last night. Otherwise, I should much earlier have thanked you for writing to me.
I feel sincerely grieved for your Aunt's -- my affectionately remembered Sister's -- loneliness and trouble. I only hope that her own health has been strong under the watching and anxiety she has had to sustain. Pray offer her on my behalf my love and sympathy: I understand the heaviness of separation after long years of union.
It is a vexation to me that your letter lay so long without being read by me, but I hope this will not fail to reach you, by means of a double address, and so assure you that my silence was not a neglectful one. Yours, my dear Nephew,
