My dear Sara,
Let me assure you for the last time that I never stickle for a word or a phrase unless it express an idea that cannot be equally well conveyed by another. I like as if quite as well as as though and lastly as well as finally -- indeed, rather better. I must have been stone blind to have left the tau out of Christos and apostles 552 and I am truly sorry that you have to correct so many stupid omissions. I am relying a little on the idea that your eye will detect the want of points etc. and I do not therefore consider these matters as minutely as I should otherwise have done, but I will attend to my figures, that is, my Roman letters, for chapters and I will put s. in the notes except when the quotation is from a Latin work. 553 I decidedly agree to the fs and ffs if you think we are great enough to create a precedent. If you think any of my future manuscript too untidy for the printer only mark it to that effect, and I will re-write it, for I do not mind that mechanical work, and my conscience is rather uneasy lest the illegibility of my hand should increase materially the expense of the publication. Do not be alarmed because I am not well just now -- I shall be better very soon and I am not really disgusted with Strauss. I only fancy so sometimes, as I do with all earthly things.
