A young lady of my acquaintance 616 is so judicially blinded as to think translation and nothing but translation would be an easier life than that of a governess. She has asked me if it be possible for a person to get regular employment in this way. I do not suppose any scheme of the kind is practicable, and so I told her, but I promised to enquire for her. Her idea is that she could live in London and get her bread by turning German and French into English from morning to night. I wish you would be so good as to get a decided verdict against any such plan from an authoritative quarter that I might get the maggot out of her brain. Please do not mention the matter except for the sake of the inquiry, as she begged me to be secret.
