GE to Sara Sophia Hennell, [London, 24 November 1851]
MS: Yale. Mostly published: Cross, 1, 266.
Monday.
Dear Sara
I did not forget and meant to have written, but on Saturday afternoon 1063 I was teazed, and then came Mr. Spencer to ask Mr. Chapman and me to go to the theatre -- so I ended the day in a godless manner, seeing the Merry Wives of Windsor. 1064
You must read Carlyle's denunciation of the opera pub[lishe]d in -- the Keepsake! The Examiner quotes it at length. 1065
I send you the enclosed from Harriet Martineau. Please to return it. The one from Carlyle you may keep till I come. He is a naughty fellow to write in the Keepsake and not for us -- after I wrote him the most insinuating letter, 1066 offering him three glorious subjects.
Yesterday we went to Mr. Mackay's, Dr. Brabant being there. All blessings on thee, dear Sara.
Thy faithful
Pollian.
