Dear Sara
The reason I have not written to you is that I have had almost constant headache and mal-aise for the last fortnight or more so that the grasshopper has been a burthen 437 -- that is, it would have been if this had been the season for grasshoppers and I within hearing of their chirping. Now I have a cold which I am afraid is turning into a cough. The worst of it is that I can't get on with work, which is eminently needful.
I send you sixpennyworth of M.S. by today's post. If you can manage to read it and send it back by Mr. Noel, 438 so much the better. But I would rather you did not hurry over it. Perhaps Mr. Bray will be coming again soon. Send me word of the parcel's safe arrival, for I should go more hopelessly mad than Carlyle if I had any of my work to do over again. 439
I have given your letter to Mr. Chapman.
Thank you very much for writing yesterday, dear Sara. There are few people who can be generous enough to give even a letter. You see I gracefully leave your gift unreturned -- a sort of delicacy at which I am particularly au fait.
