Dear Sara
Thanks many for both your letters. It must be that tremendous conscientiousness of yours on the hunt for duties that makes you read through the Co[ntemporar]y Lit[erature] of the W[estminster] R[eview]. However it is to be worth reading in future -- done on a new plan -- the Foreign Lit[erature] blended with the Eng[lish]. J. Martineau is to do the Theology and Philosophy, Huxley the Science and Froude the History!! 391 I am afraid, though, that this will not be a very tempting programme to you.
Pleasant Mrs. Mackay came on Sunday morning and invited me to meet Dr. Elliotson tomorrow. Her husband has made his call this morning, looking frightened as to the eyes and clean as to the collar. He is full of the book on Christianity and I hope will really get it done before long. 392 I always like to see him and talk to him. He seems so kind -- so full of good-will towards one.
Have you known the misery of writing with a tired steel pen which is reluctant to make a mark? If so, you will know why I leave off.
