My dear Mrs. Ponsonby
A thousand thanks. I share the Countess Br'fchl's 186 scepticism, for there are forgeries east and west which sometimes impose on the most knowing, and doubtless there would be forgeries in Lapland and Caffraria if the Lapps and Hottentots had memorials that anybody cares about.
But the poor man's relics may be genuine, and if so the cry of want is one that I should not have been satisfied to neglect.
But you will observe that I have thrown the trouble on you. I am seeing nobody, and therefore felt helpless unless you could help, as you have so kindly done.
