Dear Sir
You will no doubt on reflection appreciate as well as imagine the reasons that must prevent a writer who cares much about his writings from willingly allowing them to be modified and in any way [adapted] by another mind than his own.
And with regard to [Romola,] the state of our stage would make me shudder at the prospect of its characters' being represented there. I need not enter into the question whether there would be the slightest probability of a play founded on that work meeting acceptance from a manager. I remain,
