My dear Mr. William
I will accept Tauchnitz's offer (£50.) if your Uncle sees no objection. It is not, I suppose, much out of proportion to the £250 he gave me for Deronda. As to what happened about Romola, it is quite irrelevant to the present state of things. And, as you observe, the hinge of the question is the sale of the cheap reprint to the travelling English -- also, I think your Uncle mentioned the export to India.
I wish, of course, to do what will be commercially the wisest, and as you have a knowledge of such relations which is not accessible to me, I must ask you to assist me with your judgment. One would not reject fifty pounds and the advantage it represents of additional distributions among Continental readers without solid reasons. But it would certainly be less objectionable to have a cheap reprint appearing in October than now, just when people are looking forward to their summer journeying.
It is still very cold here, though bright, and I am putting off going to Witley till next week.
